RECORDINGS

The following is a list of repertoire with which any musician should be familiar.  Obviously, this is not a definitive list, but it is a starting point which I hope you will continue to expand upon.  I begin with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.  The tuba does not play on this, but this is an important symphony because it bridges the gap between classical and romantic periods and as tubists we begin our journey in the romantic period.  I suggest that you find these pieces recorded by major orchestras, such as the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, The Vienna Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, etc…  If you can, listen to them with a score or if not the entire score, at least the tuba part.  Your music library should have facilities to assist you with this.

Need an extra challenge?  Audition for an orchestra in your area!  Debut, American Youth Symphony, the New World Symphony, and many others are actual paying gigs for young people.  What orchestras are in your area?  Google it!!!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!!

There is NO SUBSTITUTION for PRACTICE.  There is no magic bean or feather that will “make you better” other than working at it.  Actual quality time spent on your horn will help you improve to become the player you desire to be.

Pay attention to what is coming out of your bell.  LISTEN like crazy.  Analyze what you hear, and FIX it.  You have a brain!  Experiment until you hear something you like, then do it again.  Ask a friend, ‘What do you think of this?’ and play for them.  You will know how good of a friend they are by their honesty.
